UQ-CUHK-Exeter Joint Fund 2022 – Environmental Sustainability (Deadline: 15 July 2022, 11:59pm HK time)

CUHK, the University of Exeter (Exeter), and The University of Queensland (UQ) are world-leading in environmental science with a strong dedication to the advancement of sustainable development. The three universities have separately established the CUHK-Exeter Joint Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Resilience (ENSURE) and the QUEX Institute to tackle challenges emerging from the changing environment and its influence on planetary health.

Following the success of the joint virtual symposium and exploratory workshop on Environmental Sustainability in November 2021, a seed funding scheme was created to kick-start research initiatives to leverage the universities’ collective strengths and promote long-term collaborative projects that can access external funding sources in the future.

The theme for the joint fund is Environmental Sustainability, with priority given to three sub-themes: Marine Ecosystem, Environment and Health, and Climate Change. A total of three projects will be supported with each university being awarded one project as lead. Each project will receive a maximum award of HK$100,000. Eligible costs for support may include, but not limit to, travels/visits, workshop organization, field work, and data collection.

The fund is open to all academic staff members holding full-time employment from all disciplines and at all levels. The project team must comprise at least one member from each institution, with one being the Chief Investigator and the others being collaborators.

CUHK-UQ-Exeter Joint Symposium on Environmental Sustainability, 9 November 2021

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The University of Queensland (UQ), and University of Exeter (Exeter), are world-leading in environmental science with a strong dedication to the advancement of sustainable development. The three universities have separately established the CUHK-Exeter Joint Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Resilience (ENSURE) and the QUEX Institute to tackle challenges emerging from the changing environment and its influence on planetary health.

To share current work and to inspire collaboration, the first-ever CUHK-UQ-Exeter Joint Symposium on Environmental Sustainability was organized on 9 November 2021 to showcase some of the projects undertaken by ENSURE and QUEX Institute  in the areas of marine science, air pollution, climate adaptation and conservation, and microplastics pollution. The event also featured a panel discussion to shed light on the power of global partnership in a post-COVID world.

The Symposium is a prelude to an exploratory workshop, to be held on 16 November, on building strong researcher links to explore collaborative projects.
